Revision Control is for Source Code only
Well, I don’t think so;-)
I’ve been using a revision control tools to manage some configuration files since ages. Why? Here are some hints:
- You can rollback changes.
- You can explore the history of changes.
- You can replicate your configuration.
- You can backup your configuration.
No revision control tool is designed especially to manage /etc. Up to now! IsiSetup to the rescue:-)

This entry has been merged into a broader article on the use of revision control for system configuration management: http://www.isisetup.ch/site/scm
